Rourou is a short film created by Rachel Nepia for the Society for Ecological Restoration 2023 Film Festival in Darwin, Australia. The film was awarded an honourable mention at the festival. Rourou is a film about bringing together tradditional knowledge and western science for restoration outcomes beyond the ecological. It features interviews from members of the People, Cities & Nature team as well as other individuals in the matauranga-led restoration space.
This video captures highlights from a wānanga held in Kirikiriroa Hamilton in September 2022, designed to help people reconnect with both nature and culture. Participants explored local maramataka (seasonal calendars), taonga, and traditional practices unique to Ngāti Wairere and the rohe. The wānanga empowered rangatahi to embrace mātauranga Māori, strengthening their confidence to carry ancestral knowledge forward. Through stories, carving, gully restoration, and shared experiences with kaumātua, kuia, and passionate teachers, the event fostered deeper connections between people, place, and whakapapa. Attendees reflected on what it means to be kaitiaki of te taiao today and how indigenous knowledge can guide better decisions for the future of Kirikiriroa. Join us in this journey of rediscovery—he taonga tuku iho, knowledge to guide us forward.
